The team’s reasearch is related to acclimation and adaptation responses of plants to key environmental drivers.

The focus of the research is on feedback mechanisms between plant carbon balance, volatile emissions and atmospheric characteristics and climate (wild plants stress responses, stress responses and tolerance of existing and potential crop species).

The work is conducted at all levels of biological organization from genes to globe using experimental and modeling techniques.

Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR) is build up in Järvselja forest, located 50 km from Tartu. The mast  for measurement equipment is 130 m high. The concept of the SMEAR Estonia station is to measure concentrations and fluxes of energy and matter in the atmosphere—biosphere system.

SMEAR Estonia web page is here.
